Maytime Band Review Press Release (09-05-2017)

September 5, 2017 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2017 MAYTIME BAND REVIEW
Saturday, October 7, 2017
Parade start time – 10:00 am
Tidelands Avenue into Pepper Park

Sixty-nine years ago, three people had a dream, an idea for an educational project to benefit National City and young musicians. A committee was formed and from that idea, the Maytime Band Review was born. The first parade consisted of 12 bands, but during the next 55 years the parade grew in size and national recognition. Countless bands and thousands of spectators traveled to National City to experience the competitiveness of the Maytime Band Review. Sadly, in 2004 the band review committee decided to end this iconic parade.

Last year after a twelve year hiatus the Maytime Band Review returned to National City. In 2013, a few community leaders began the quest to #BringBackMaytime which lead us to today. The Return of the Maytime Band Review, a modest parade as it was originally, will rekindle the flames of band competition. This time the parade is founded on nostalgic childhood memories and the desire to continue this legacy. “Generation after generation over the last 69 years have marched in the Maytime Band Review and this year we’re back to create memories for todays’ generation,” said National City Mayor Ron Morrison.

The original parade ran from 1948 through 2004. High school bands throughout the United States traveled to National City to compete in this competition. This year, Maytime will march down Tidelands Avenue, (from 24th to 32nd Street) into Pepper Park to an awaiting festival and ceremony. On Saturday, October 7, 2017 the Tidelands sidewalks will be lined with thousands of spectators. Our role in returning the Maytime Band Review is to promote musical education, business partnerships and community involvement. “This is the time to celebrate National City, Maytime Band Review, but most of all it’s the time to celebrate these great young people,” said Maytime Band Review President Karen Azhocar McManus.
